A study conducted on skin cells in the presence of epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV), a very rare hereditary skin disease characterized by chronic infection with human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes polymorphic skin lesions and a high risk of developing non-melanoma skin cancer. Morphologically, the skin takes on the form of warts of various shapes that feel like tree bark or roots to the touch, leading to those with this condition being called “tree men or women.” This work is also a call for non-discrimination towards others, which we often see in our society. The choice to represent the human figure without reproducing the face, but replacing it with a collage of hands affected by EV, is deliberate. We may all have to deal with something unexpected tomorrow, and the hands positioned as if they were the foliage of a tree symbolize the open-mindedness that we should all have. We often forget that to make things less difficult for others, we just need to be kind and less discriminatory.
